In this episode, I talk about an audio restoration project involving a World War Two veteran and how I used iZotope RX, equalization, and compression/limiting to clean-up and enhance the recording.
If you haven't caught word yet, the blog Hypebot is sponsoring a Hit Song Contest. What makes this contest unique is that the lyrics were written using the words most often used in the Top 50 downloaded songs for the year. Yes, a completely manufactured lyric! The challenge is to write "the most stereotypical pop song" using the provided lyrics. And the lyrics are, well, awful in a funny sort of way.
Enter the band Triangle Exception, who penned a nice little country tune around the "data driven" lyrics. The resulting song is a strange mix of stereotypical country and rap/hip-hop lyrical silliness in their version of “Had Enough Tonight”
I felt honored when the band asked me to mix and master “Had Enough Tonight” and thrilled when the song caught the attention of Hypebot editor Kyle Bylin, who said in a recent post...
...there have been some amazing entries in the contest; one in particular with its little bit of twang, that made my day.
So, congratulations to Triangle Exception. Thanks for taking me along on the ride, and good luck in the contest!
UPDATE: Today, 9/10/10, I just found out that Triangle Exception's song was selected as a runner up in the contest. Awesome work Doug and Steve! Read all the details here.
If you're an independent musician and haven't discovered the CD Baby DIY Musician Podcast, be sure to check out Episode #79. Kevin Breuner said a few kind words about my mix of his band's Christmas song. Thanks to Kevin and the rest of the guys in Hello Morning.
The CD Baby DIY Musician Podcast features interviews with independent musicians, engineers, booking agents, marketing and promotion luminaries and more. I've been a listener since Episode #1 and it's an honor to have been mentioned on the show. Truly a great resource for the indie musician.
I recently finished mixing and mastering Karen Joy Brown’s album, Fabulous Junkyard. Karen has a sultry voice and is an amazing talent. The album is a collection of folksy original songs, and one tastefully chosen cover, showcasing her excellent songwriting skills. It was a pleasure to work with Karen. She even let me add some cymbals and electric guitar to a couple tracks!
